Waterbuck

The waterbuck is from South Africa. Recently they have been re-introduced at St Lucia and Itala game reserves in KwaZulu-Natal.
This antelope species is one of the few that does not mark its territory with dung or urine. His smell alone is sufficient to alert other animals. (The smell is caused by its greasy like coating on the outer hide that provides resilience to water). Females stay in herds of 25 or so and go in and out of male territories. The male is rarely successful in retaining a female to his territory. The waterbuck will hold a territory year around if undisturbed or challenged, they do not migrate often. Only male Water Buffalo have horns. These large horns a ringed and can grow as long as 40 inches! The horns are widely spaced and curve gracefully back and up. Like most horned males, sometimes the horns are used with lethal force to fight other males over territory.
