The Nyala is a South African native but today can be found in Southern Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and some parts of Eastern South Africa. It chooses to live where ever there is fresh water and good quality grasslands. Scientists determined the Nyala species may have been around for the last 5.8 million years! They are mainly active during the early morning and late afternoon. They eat foliage, fruits, flowers, and twigs and require a regular intake of water to stay hydrated. They will likely be found anywhere they have easy access to water. They are alert and wary, they use a sharp bark like as a warning to alert the herd that a predator is near. Unlike other antelope species, only the males grow horns, the horns will grow from 24 to 33 inches in length and have a long yellow tip!
